A cataract is a clouding of the lens, the eye's natural lens that focuses light. When the lens loses its transparency, less light gets through and vision becomes blurry or cloudy.
They usually appear with age: around the age of 40 the proteins in the lens start to break down, and by 80 most people have cataracts or have already had surgery, according to the US National Eye Institute.
They can affect one eye or both, but they do not spread from one eye to the other. They progress slowly and are painless, which is why they are hardly noticeable at first.
Like looking through a misted-up window.
Lights bother you and you see halos around them.
It is hard to see in low light, especially when driving.
Colours look less vivid than before.
You may see double with just one eye.
You need new glasses every so often.

Many people describe it as looking through misted-up or frosted glass. Colours lose intensity and bright lights are bothersome, especially at night.
Little by little, driving, reading or recognising faces gets harder. If this happens to you, do not put it down to age alone: have your eyes checked.
Do headlights dazzle you when driving at night? Tell us during your eye test: glare is one of the possible symptoms of cataracts.
The most common cause is ageing of the lens, but some factors increase the risk or make them appear earlier.
The lens loses its transparency over the years.
It increases the risk and can make them appear earlier.
Smoking and drinking too much increase the risk.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays.
Taking steroid medicines.
If there have been cataracts in your family.
A hard knock, inflammation or previous eye surgery.
For example, radiotherapy to the upper body.

At LUPER we do not diagnose cataracts, but the eye test can show signs that something other than your prescription is affecting your vision.
The diagnosis is made by the ophthalmologist. They confirm it with a dilated eye examination and a slit lamp, which allows the lens to be seen. If we suspect cataracts, we will recommend that you see one.
Book a free eye testIt depends on how much they affect your daily life. It is always assessed by the ophthalmologist.
Glasses or contact lenses with your new prescription, more light for reading, anti-glare sunglasses or a magnifier can help you see better.
Most people do not need surgery straight away, and waiting does not damage the eye or make a later operation more difficult.
It is the only way to remove a cataract. The cloudy lens is replaced with an intraocular lens.
Cataract surgery is assessed, decided on and carried out by the ophthalmologist, usually when cataracts stop you doing things like reading, driving or watching television normally. Ask them about the benefits and risks in your case. At LUPER we check your eyes and make the glasses you need.

Age cannot be avoided, but some habits reduce the risk:

No. Cataracts progress slowly and painlessly. If you have eye pain, it may be due to another cause and you should see a doctor; if it is severe or you suddenly lose vision, go to A&E.
The lens starts to change around the age of 40, although cataracts are usually noticed later. By the age of 80, most people have cataracts or have already had surgery. They can also appear earlier due to diabetes, corticosteroids, eye injuries or radiation, and some babies are born with them.
Yes. Cataracts can appear in one eye or both, and they do not spread from one eye to the other.
Yes. At first, glasses or contact lenses with an updated prescription can help you see better. If you notice that your prescription changes very often or that you cannot see well even with new glasses, it is best to have your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist.
The ophthalmologist decides with you, usually when cataracts stop you doing things like reading, driving or watching television normally. Most people do not need surgery straight away, and waiting does not damage the eye or make the operation more difficult.
They are not usually an emergency, but over time vision gets worse and can make tasks such as driving difficult. According to the WHO, they are the most common cause worldwide of poor distance vision that could be prevented or has not been treated. That is why it is a good idea to have your eyes checked and talk to an ophthalmologist.
You cannot stop the years going by, but it helps to wear sunglasses with a UV filter and a hat with a brim, not smoke, drink alcohol in moderation, eat fruit and vegetables, keep diabetes under control and protect your eyes from knocks.
No. LUPER is an opticians: we check your eyes in a free eye test and, if we suspect cataracts, we recommend that you see an ophthalmologist, who is the one who diagnoses, decides on and performs the operation. We make the glasses you need.
Cataracts in the eyes are a clouding of the lens, the eye's natural lens that focuses light. When it loses its transparency, light scatters and vision becomes blurry or cloudy. They are more common with age, but they can also appear due to injuries, radiation or the use of some medicines, and some babies are born with them.
The symptoms of cataracts appear gradually: blurry or cloudy vision, especially in low light; glare and sensitivity to light, including when driving at night; halos around lights; faded colours; double vision in one eye and frequent changes of prescription. If you notice any of these, book an eye test.
As if they were looking through misted-up glass. Colours lose their clarity and bright lights are bothersome, especially at night, which makes it harder to drive, read or recognise faces.
The main cause is ageing of the lens. The risk is increased by diabetes, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, family history, eye injuries or surgery, radiation, prolonged sun exposure without protection and the use of corticosteroids.
Depending on their origin, cataracts can be age-related, traumatic, caused by radiation, childhood or congenital, and secondary, when scar tissue forms after the operation and clouds vision again.
The ophthalmologist diagnoses cataracts with a dilated eye examination and a slit lamp. At first, glasses with a new prescription, better lighting or a magnifier may be enough. When they affect daily life, cataract surgery is the only way to remove them: the cloudy lens is replaced with an intraocular lens. The operation is assessed, decided on and carried out by the ophthalmologist.
Wear sunglasses that block UV rays, do not smoke, drink alcohol in moderation, follow a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and keep conditions such as diabetes under control.

Me he elegido unas gafas preciosas y además he tenido 20 € de descuento.
Hoy he estado y me ha atendido Jaime.
